Getting a new dog / puppy sounds like the best thing in the world, doesn’t it? You’re so busy thinking about how much fun it’s going to be to play and get to know each other that sometimes you can forget all the little things…the things which nobody tells you. Here are a few common problems that new owners of dogs / puppies encounter all the time (even if they have been a previous dog owner: not all are the same!)

1) The settling-in problem: new owners are often perplexed by their dog’s behaviour on the first few nights or weeks. The dog can be happy one minute, then whining and keeping everyone awake. There is no one-fix solution here. The dog’s angst can depend on a number of things: maybe he doesn’t like his new bed? Maybe he feels upset because his bed is by the back door and the loneliness he is feeling is just too much to take. Or perhaps he is just getting to grips with his new surroundings. Give it time, or even better join a dog forum / club and ask other people.

2) The getting-to-know-each-other conundrum: I know, I know, it’s sad! You get your brand new puppy home and he doesn’t want to know you! All he does is run away. Have no fear, new dogs often do this. Give it a few hours and if the problem persists only then need you worry about seeking professional advice.

3) The-woopsy-on-the-carpet-problem: everyone knows this one. One minute the puppy is playing and everything is fine…the next he does a gift on the floor and it’s a horror story (especially if you realize you dont have any cleaning supplies in)! This is normal, so don’t blame the dog. Start training before it becomes a regular problem and you should be fine. But don’t blame the dog whatever you do; stressing the dog out will only increase the chance of there being more problems in the future.

Looking for some unconditional love??? Then head out to the nearest pet store and pick up a cute little puppy for yourself. Better still, hook up your computer, type in ‘online pet stores’ in the search box and be prepared for the onslaught you are about to face. Just like the many business set ups that have headed the e-commerce way, pet stores have also decided to throw their paws in and set up shop online.

The advantage online pet stores have over the traditional ones is that there is no paucity of space here. You do not have to worry about accommodating all the pets you would like to sell through your shop. Most online stores do not have just one facility where they house all the pets showcased on their websites. Many of them partner up with other pet business houses and when a demand for a particular pet comes in, they simply function as the go between for the buyer and the seller. Online pet stores are able to reach out to a larger target audience thanks to the power of the World Wide Web. This is something the local pet stores cannot match. Geographical limitations apply to traditional pet stores. The only way they have to promote their business is by word of mouth, a loyal customer base and perhaps local advertising to a certain extent.

Online pet stores are also able to offer a whole host of other products such as pet clothing, accessories, on call grooming services and even hand towels with your pets face on them. So the next time you need to bring home a pet or just need to pick up some pet supplies for your dear pet, you can do all that and much more just by settling down comfortably in front of your computer at home and let your fingers do all the work.

Everyone is out there doing their bit these days to stamp out their carbon footprint. With the growing awareness of global warming and the instinctive need to survive and make the most of what the world has to offer in a lifetime, people around the world are zealously looking at safer, cheaper and greener alternatives to almost anything , from clothing to fuel and oil to lighting and now even pet products. You do have a section whose money power limits their understanding of how, what they do in day to day life affects the environment. Yet there are many others who like to cover all bases and contribute as much as they can to make the world a healthier, safer place to live in. Eco-friendly is the buzz word and pet product manufacturers seem to be coming up with dedicated product lines catering to people who would like to ‘go green‘. If you belong to the environment conscious group and you would like your pet to also subscribe to your way of living, a little search and effort can take you to places that offer clean and natural green solutions in pet products. These days you can get beds, collars and even pet toys made out of recycled material.

Choosing products made out of sustainable material does not mean giving up on style for those who like to treat their pets to the best. With a little creativity the best of designer stuff can be made out of the rather plain looking bamboo or hemp. Go organic with your pet and make a difference.

People have fought over houses, jewelry, leather sofas, sail boats and business. There is now a new entrant in the list of ‘things to squabble over’, however strange they may be for estranged couples. In what is believed to be the first ever battle of its kind when it comes to custody hearings, recently a couple in <state w:st="on"/>Maryland</place /></state /> have been ordered to share custody of their pet dog. Pets are no longer just animals you pick up because you feel sorry for them at a shelter, as playmates for your kids or as just something to come home to after a long day at work. In fact in many households where the couple is actively pursuing challenging careers and starting a family lists deep down on the priority list, pets have begun to take the place of children. Many even end up spending much more on the pet than they would actually have on a child. Pets have designer houses, accessories and even clothing. No wonder then, that when the couple no longer wishes to share the same roof, disputes on who keeps the pet crop up and they do not really view the legal fees involved as an unnecessary expense. The law has also begun to realize the need to bring in some form of regulation in order to address such disputes.

However the <state w:st="on"/>Maryland</place /></state /> ruling has been a first as far as animal law is concerned and is not being seen as some form of a precedent for others with similar needs to follow. But the day is not far when couples sit down to draw up their lists and promptly add their beloved pet’s name right on top.

If your pet of choice is a pure bred dog, then you should not be settling for anybody less than an established dog breeder. Reputed breeders place quality over profit and do not subscribe to the puppy mill operational strategy. The latter focuses solely on the commercial aspect of breeding and on how fat a tag each puppy is able to carry. When breeding takes the commercial route that’s when you should be concerned about how your pet will turn out. More often than not these breeding places are not maintained well, are overcrowded and adequate care is not taken when it comes to grooming and overall maintenance of the dogs. Not only will the animal be impacted physically by such conditions, in all likelihood this would also lead to a whole host of behavioral issues as well.

How do you go about finding a reliable breeder? You could begin by consulting your veterinarian, normally breeders will be quite close with someone within vet jobs, and they may be able to recommend someone to you. Kennel clubs and pet show organizers are also good sources you can rely on for information on established breeders. Look for reliable references, meet up with the breeder, check credentials and ask a lot of questions, seek out a client list and speak to people who have been dealing with a particular breeder. Good breeders will not hesitate if you ask to see the facilities or insist on having the pet examined before you buy it. Breeders who are passionate about dogs and their business will always run a clean operation and when you walk out of their premises with your dog you can rest assured that you not only have your money’s worth, but your dog is also healthy physically and mentally and is well cared for.

Cats have never suffered from insomnia. In fact, they turn sleeping into a natural art which many of us wish we could acquire. Often, the only reason a cat will awaken is to find another comfy spot or two to curl up and have another cat nap. If one of those purr-fect haunts is your bed or sofa, you need to take the c-law into your own hands and teach kitty to use her own bed.

It is a well known fact that cats have a stubborn streak in them, so it is not a good idea to spend too much money on a luxury snooze pad if kitty sees purple every time you try to persuade her to sit on her satin boudoir.

Cats love to stretch, twist and curl themselves into many wacky positions when sleeping. Stop puss from waking in a bad mew’d by ensuring that the bed you choose is spacious enough for her to feel safe and sound but not so large that she feels insecure. Opt for washable cat beds which have removable covers to keep parasites allergens and odours at bay.

If your cat still insists on using your bed, you need to find a way of gently dropping the hint that her days of taking over your pillow are history. A good way to do this is to scatter some of her favourite cat toys onto her bed or sprinkle the surface of the bed with cat nip. You could also try placing your cat’s bed in a spot where she loves to stretch out and catch up on some much needed shut eye. A cat’s body temperature drops significantly when she is sleeping so try placing her bed near to a radiator. These few simple suggestions could encourage kitty to sleep in her bed all night until it is time to wake for her Mice Krispies. If you are still having trouble keeping your kitten at bay, contact someone at vet jobs London, it could be that she is having trouble sleeping full stop. Something that your local animal carers will be able to educate you on.

There are families that have had pets for many years. These pets are like members of the family to them. The thought of anything bad happening to their beloved pets terrifies them. They do any and everything to protect them.

A few years ago there was a major hurricane that hit Louisiana and caused major destruction. People were forced to relocate from their homes and many were not allowed to bring their pets. The animals were left to fend for themselves and many animals died during that horrible time.

In an effort to make sure that type of travesty does not happen again many cities have now made shelters staffed with vet nurse jobs for pets during natural disasters. These shelters will only be opened up when a disaster occurs. The shelters are prepared to take many animals. They will be able to care for many different types of animals not just dogs and cats. There will be plenty of space for the animals so that they will not have to be cramped and uncomfortable. They will have plenty of space to stretch out. They will keep the animals safe and secure until the devastation is over. The animals will not be left to fend for themselves. The people will take care of the animals as if they were their own pets. They will feed them, give them water, bathe them, play with them, and most importantly love them.

Many of the shelters have trailers that carry extra supplies. The trailers make it so the different shelters can always get the supplies delivered that they need. The preparation for devastation is amazing. No pet will be left out and all will feel as though they are in a hotel or kennel. The pets will not feel the anxiety of the chaos. They will be loved and cared for as if you were there with them.

When you have a cute little dog running around you may be so excited at first. You will just want to love and pet it constantly. Everything it does is just the cutest thing you have ever seen and you will not want to tell it no. Eventually that adorable little puppy may turn into a little monster if you don’t reprimand him from the beginning. You can not let a puppy do whatever they want just because they are cute.

When they are chewing up something that is important to you or expensive you will not think that they are as cute. To start training your puppy you need to first set boundaries. Do not allow the puppy to play with just anything as a toy. They need to have their own specific toys. Do not get them toys that look like shoes, hats, phones, or anything that you want to keep them from chewing on. If you get them any toys that resemble those things they may confuse the real ones with their toys and chew them up. Being very stern and repetitive with the puppy will help. You need to be consistent.

Make sure that if you tell them no from doing something one time that you are steadfast and tell them no every time. Puppies learn through repetition. You will get far more enjoyment from a dog who is well behaved and knows it’s limitations. You do not want to spend years yelling and fighting with a dog about what they are doing. You want to enjoy the puppy and enjoy the companionship you’ll share. By teaching them young what you expect you can have a great pet that you enjoy coming home to not, one that you dread coming home and seeing what they ruined or paper hand towels strewn around the place.

Potty training a puppy can sometimes be quite difficult. Certain breeds of dogs are harder to potty train than others. Before purchasing a dog it is important to find out how often they need to go outside to go potty. If you can not take them as often as they need you may need to install a doggy door or hire a dog walker.

When you first get a new dog you need to start potty training immediately. There are people who say to rub the dog’s nose in their accidents and some that say it is wrong to do so. The decision is up to you. You need to take the dog outside as soon as they are taking the stance to go to the bathroom. You need to take them out within ten minutes of them drinking water and thirty minutes of them eating. When the dog does it’s business outside like they are supposed to you need to make a big deal about it. Go over the top with your enthusiasm. Tell them how good they are and pet them a lot. Right before you go back into the house make sure to tell them how good they are and pet them again to reassure them they did the right thing.

When your puppy has accidents you need to tell them no. Take them straight outside and do the usual routine for going potty. If they go potty outside you need to congratulate them and pet them even if you are upset about their accident. Do not tell them they are bad or anything negative while they are outside. Make sure that they think of going potty outside as nothing but positive.

Using positive reinforcement as much as you can during potty training a puppy will help immensely. Soon your puppy will be going to the door and either scratching or whining to go outside. Be repetitive and consistent and you will be happy with the results.
Breaking up a dog fight can prove to be unsafe for most people, even wearing your best brooks running shoes you will probably not be able to outrun an angry dog. Once two dogs are in fighting mode, their main goal is survival. An instinctive way to protective themselves is by using a series of quick bites and movements. You should never be caught between the two dogs, but if you absolutely must break up a fight - get another person. The two man approach is safer then handling this scenario by yourself.

Never reach out to grab the dogs in attempt to close their mouths. This is by far the worst method you could take for stopping a dog fight. Usually when a person does this, the fight will be directed towards them instead. They could easily chomp down on your fingers with their teeth.

If there is another person to help out, you both can do the “wheelbarrow trick”. Firmly grab your dog by its hind quarters, quickly lifting it up off the ground. While you are doing this, you should walk backwards while side stepping so that the dog can’t reach back as easily to bite you. Once you both have done this together, walk the dogs to their separate kennels or take the other dog home if it is a neighbour’s dog.

You can also use a fire extinguisher to spray them. Most dogs will jump at this and others will not, so it may or may not work. You can also spray them with a water hose to stop the two from inflicting any more injuries. One more item to use could be a broom stick. Simply put it between the two, pushing one dog away from the other with it. Do the same to the other dog until you can leash him/her and bring your dog inside.

For any aggressive dog fight, a noise-making device is a great asset to have. Remember that most dogs have extra sensitive hearing, so an air horn will mostly likely startle them. If you must, you can blow the air horn twice to get them away. Also, silent devices made to stop dog barking can help a situation like this.
