It seems to be a really big trend these days for people to be buying their pets clothes to wear, and it has got me thinking about the ethical implications of this and whether this is right or not? In basic terms you have to look at whose benefit the clothes are for when deciding if it is cruelty or not. If the animal’s feelings and welfare is not the primary concern in any situation, I would suggest that the actions being taken are not ethical.

Some people seem to be using animals, especially dogs, as fashion items, and they are dressing them accordingly. I would strongly stand against anyone that buys a dog for their own personal satisfaction and status alone. I understand that in general they probably treat the animals in an acceptable manner, but do these dogs really want to be carried around in a bag, with a sparkly jacket on? I imagine not! Some people may claim that it is because the dog is cold, but if that is the case, why is the coat decorated to match the owner’s clothes? And also, what did all these dogs do before dog coats were invented?

I am not here to say that it is wrong or right to give animals jackets or throws to keep them warm, as PETA have come out and said that the coats can actually save the lives of some weak and ill dogs that have short fur. Some great hr software would probably be able to identify the ones that are in the most need. In extreme cold weather, some dogs do benefit from having a throw on their back that warms them when they are out in freezing temperatures. If this is the primary reason for the owner putting the dog in clothes, I would say this was morally ok, however, if the primary reason was for the dog to look ‘cute'then it is wrong and a little cruel.
