Training your dog to come when he is called can be an arduous task, but with a little bit of effort on your part will see the training go smoothly. Here is a step by step approach to training your dog to come.
1. Offer treats. When your dog makes progress in the training, you should always offer him a nice treat. This could be in the form of his favourite snack or even his favourite toy. Either way, make sure it is a treat that your dog actually wants, or it won’t be a reward. You should reward your dog for all steps forward in his training regimen. If he moves slightly forward when you call him (not all the way), give him a treat.
2. Use your dog’s name. After your dog begins to come to you when you offer him treats, it is now time to move forward. Constant use of your dog’s name will encourage your pet to come when he is called. Keep the treat hidden, so that he is responding to his name rather than his desire to have the treat. Give him the treat once he successfully comes.
3. Once your dog starts responding to his name, it is time to eliminate the treats. Your dog should come to you when he is called, not because he will get a reward. Remember, the treat is only used to encourage your dog during the preliminary stages of his training.
4. Offer positive reinforcement. Always praise your dog when he successfully comes when he is called. This way, your dog will see the praise as his reward as opposed to having a snack or his favourite toy.
5. Constant training. Keep up with these steps. Always practise; consider daily routines that fit your schedule. After a week or two you will start to see your dog’s progress.
Once your dog knows his name, you are able to use it for positive reenforcement, or alternatively use it to discipline him and keep him off your luxury designer bedding!
