So you’ve got a brand new dog, that’s great! But hold on. Before you go letting your dog off the lead there are a few things you need to look out for. Many owners, especially if they haven’t had a dog before, need to be aware of the numerous dangerous things which are hanging around in the house and in the garden. Here are some things to consider if you’ve just got a dog or are new to the game:

1) Get insurance and don’t put it off: so many people think that ‘it won’t happen to them’; in reality, all it takes is one simple problem and you could be paying out to the vet easily what you paid to buy the dog in the first place. Cuts, wounds and other things, however small, soon add up.

2) Be aware of what’s lying about the house: chocolate can be highly poisonous to dogs; half a bar of this stuff could easily kill them. The same goes for many foods that humans eat and suppose dogs can eat fine, too. Stick to giving them the proper doggy stuff–your dog, that is–and you can’t go far wrong.

3) Builders: many dog owners don’t give a second thought to what to do with the dog when the workmen arrive, then wonder why the dog is in distress. Remember: the builders also sometimes leave unwanted things lying around; things like lino, plastic, and rubber all look very appealing to a dog with intense curiosity and not much to do. This is the point when you would want to have Synergy Vets on speed dial.
