How To Look After A Greyhound

Greyhounds have to be one of the most overlooked breeds of dog, for obvious reasons; bred solely for the purpose of racing, many people are surprised to learn that greyhounds actually make a fantastic pet, as good and affectionate as any other.

Like any dog, Greyhounds are prone to a number of specific traits—many of which are the direct result of a life spent living in kennels with a number of other dogs (usually from the same litter).

Here are some useful tips about re-homing a greyhound and acquainting it with your family and home:

1) Greyhounds are not used to human interaction: having been brought up without seeing any humans other than those who look after them, Greyhounds often require several months to get used to being around humans all the time; dogs may vent their angst in a number of ways, but the important thing to remember is that they’ll come around eventually, usually finding that they prefer human interaction over that with dogs.

2) Having been confined to kennels, Greyhounds, generally speaking, have never seen a home before either. Subsequently they are unfamiliar with everything inside it: washing machines, televisions and large objects may be a terrifying new thing at first, but most animals come around very quickly, providing they are treated with love and affection.

3) Greyhounds love to play as much as run! Odd as that may sound, it’s true; they are also very possessive animals, and very often unusually curious about anything that looks to be fun. Greyhounds are also notorious thieves, so keep any important belongings out of harms way.

4) The one advantage that Greyhounds have over other breeds is that they are very used to discipline and routine. Providing a regular routine and feeding time is adhered too, there is no reason why they can’t be perfectly settles in a number of weeks.

Before I go I just wanted to tell you all that I have applied for a couple Locum vet jobs. I may need a few more references, any help would be massively appreciated!
