African Grey parrots are one of the most popular pets for bird lovers. They are extremely intelligent and independent. Training them is fairly easy because the learn quick. There is a number of things your pet African Grey will learn to do once taught. For instance, you can get your Grey to talk, perform tricks, imitate just about any sound, solve puzzles and more. The key, however, is to build a relationship with your bird and get him comfortable. Below are some tips to get your Grey comfy and ready to perform.
Show your bird lots of attention and talk to it often. Let it get comfortable with you and your voice. When first starting out, do not make any sudden movements or you will scare it and thus slow down the relationship building process.
Offer your African Grey plenty of treats it likes such as dried fruit or nuts. Reward him for good behavior and for making progress in this warming up process.
Once your bird begins to warm up to you and lets you touch him, you can start to let it wonder from it’s cage. Birds love to explore, especially African Greys. Let your Grey fly around the house and explore new areas. Soon enough you will notice it begin to mimic different sounds such as the TV, refrigerator and other household sounds.
Buy your African Grey with new toys. They get bored of the same old toys just like children do, so periodically replace their old toys with new ones. Rotate between the frequently. Play with your bird as well. You can interact with it through the use of ropes, towels, soft balls or any of it’s favorite toys.
Show your bird lot’s of love and attention and you will begin to see it perform a variety of different tricks. African Greys make great pets and can be a lot of fun.
