Feeding Your Dog Table Scraps - When It Becomes Too Much

Feeding Your Dog Table Scraps - When It Becomes Too Much

There is much controversy when it comes to giving dogs table scraps. Every dog lover has been guilty of passing table food to their loved pet under the table. This is ok, if you do it in moderation. However, there are some foods that you really should not give to your dog as they can cause problems.

The first food is chocolate. Chocolate contains theobromine which is toxic to dogs in large quantities. It acts similar to caffeine. Some signs that your dog has gotten into chocolate is hyperactivity, vomiting, diarrhea or increased urination.

Another food to avoid is pork. It has been said that some pork products may cause liver or pancreas problems in dogs.

Beware when giving your dogs meat from a bone as the bone can splinter and get lodged in their throat or cut them. If you must give your dog a bone, make sure it is big and bulky.

There are other foods to avoid, but these are a few of the most common. For more information on table scraps and dogs, you can read up on it here.
I remember last year when I had an emergency with my dog after my sister had mistakenly left a piece of chocolate on the table and it was slyly eaten by mel (that’s the dog, not my sister). It really surprised me how sick she got, because I always thought the dogs and chocolate thing was a little bit of an old wives tale. What surprised me even more was the vet bill that I later received and the total cost of it all. So I urge you, if you have a dog, watch what they eat really carefully, but also consider getting dog insurance, because even though we always think we will be able to keep our pets safe, sometimes chocolate does get left on the table.
