Are you trying to decide to get a cat? Here are a few things to think about first.
Do I have time for a cat? Unlike dogs, cats don’t require as much time. They are self-reliant and loners by nature. You do get an occasional “lap cat” but even these snugly cats that like people, don’t mind being alone. If you are a busy person, a cat is a much better choice for a pet than a dog. Many people
make this choice because of their job. If you work on corporate team building in the UK then you will have to travel alot for your work. A dog is a big commitment, they will miss you and you will have to either arrange proper car through friends, or have to pay for it. With a cat this is less of an issue.
Where can I get a cat? Check your local shelters, especially if you have a kill shelter near you. If you can keep a kitty from being put to sleep then that would be great. There are many other places too, like the newspaper, your local Craigslist site.
Can I afford a cat? Like all pets, it takes some money to care for the cat. You have to buy food, treats, litter and a litter box, toys, and of course you have to take it to the vet for regular check ups which in this case pet insurance should cover it. Some people even like taking their cats to the groomers to get a bath and brush.
Should I let my cat go outside? This is going to depend on your cat. If your cat has been declawed, then he should stay inside. With no claws your cat has very little to protect itself so it is safe inside. Also, it depends on the nature of your cat. Some cats will stay close to home if let outside, however others may not come back once they have the freedom of the outdoors.
Is my house safe for a cat? Cats like to climb and jump. You should make sure all shelves are secure so they don’t tip over if the cat jumps on it. Also they like to go inside things, like drawers. Be sure there is nothing sharp inside an open drawer that the cat may get hurt on.
Bring a cat into your home is something you need to think about and decide if it is the right time for you. Cats can bring a lot of enjoyment into your life and can be a great addition to your family.
