Cat Wars: A Long Time Ago in a Litter Box Far, Far Way

Cat Wars: A Long Time Ago in a Litter Box Far, Far Way

I have three cats. This statement might turn some people away all by itself. Some consider this to be an excessive amount of cats. However, I love each one of them for their own unique personalities and traits. But, when I first got them all together under the same roof, the fighting was nonstop. Here are some of the things I did to stop my cats from tearing each other apart. Alternatively, you can just load up on cat insuranceand hope for the best.

My two older cats, Poose and Butters, were being watched by relatives in another state as we acclimated to our new home. In the meantime, we rescued a little kitten from a neglectful owner. The kitten’s name is Tonto. All cats have been to a veterinarian and are in good health, free of any communicable disease.Butters is spayed, Poose is not. All are females.Poose and Butters are both about 2 years old. They get along perfectly, even going so far as to lick each other whenever they should pass by.

Finally, Poose and Butters come back home. However, Tonto is in the house. We notice Butters getting along with Tonto no problem. But now, Poose fights with Butters (who she previously got along with perfectly) and Tonto at any given opportunity. Poose becomes surly and stalks around constantly on the prowl. The other two, Tonto and Butters, lick each other and wrestle playfully all of the time.

After consulting with our veterinarian regarding Poose’s constant attacks and grumpiness, she suggested the following items:

  • Have one more litter box than you do cats. In our case, we set up four litter boxes since we have three cats.
  • Have a food and water dish filled and prepared for each cat and store said dishes in separate areas of the house.
  • Spay/Neuter all of the cats.
  • Give Poose (the most violent) prescribed anti-anxiety medication until behavior has changed. Then, gradually ween her off of the medication.

We did all these things and it was a very slow process. However, all cats get along now and love to play with each other. It is fun to watch and we do not need to shell out for pet insurance as the cats are not attacking each other constantly.
